BLUE WHALE (Balaenoptera Musculus)
Blue Whales can reach lengths of up to 104 feet, making them the largest animal to ever live. The Brachiosaurus, the largest dinosaur, was only about 85 feet long—much smaller in comparison! Blue whales are so large that their hearts are the size of a Volkswagen Beatle and a small child could swim through its arteries!
Though the Blue Whale is so large, it actually preys upon some of the smallest animals in the world: krill and plankton. These almost microscopic creatures congregate in extremely large groups. When a Blue Whale eats, it will approach one of these large groups with its mouth open, scoop up gallons of water, and filter the krill out to swallow using its tongue. They can eat up to 3 tons of food per day! Blue Whales can often be spotted on our whale watching trips lunge-feeding during their migration in the summer and fall months.
Though Blue Whales used to be scarce in Southern California, in about 2005, the species began making regular appearances in summer and fall. Now, it is one of our most commonly sighted whales!
